Pet Surgery

Taking measures to keep your pets healthy and active through preventative care, proper exercise and nutrition management is a key part of protecting a pet. Unfortunately, accidents and injuries may happen at the most unexpected times. In certain situations, surgical procedures are a necessary part of keeping a dog or cat in good health. At Sun City Animal Hospital, we offer surgical procedures to help your pet in an emergency or as part of preventative care.

What is Pet Surgery?

As the name implies, pet surgery refers to any surgical procedure used to keep your pets healthy. It may refer to an emergency surgery after an accident or it may relate to spaying and neutering a pet. At our clinic, we offer spaying, neutering, and orthopedic care. We evaluate the needs of your pet and then provide appropriate solutions based on their situation and the concerns you want to address. We also take appropriate measures to keep your pet healthy in an emergency situation.

Why Consider Surgery?

At Sun City Animal Hospital, we offer orthopedic care and surgical procedures to address emergencies and injuries. The treatments help when a pet is injured and may need surgery to correct the injury. For example, if a dog breaks a bone, then surgical procedures may be necessary to set the bone in certain situations. In particular, we help when injuries cause severe pain, broken bones and cuts to a pet's body.

In the case of spaying or neutering a pet, the reasons vary based on the age of your pet and their situation. We usually recommend spaying or neutering at a young age to prevent health complications, certain forms of cancer and unwanted behaviors. In male pets, it may reduce the risk of roaming or aggressive behaviors when pets a neutered at a young age. In female pets, you want to consider the procedure before the first heat cycle to prevent unwanted behaviors when a pet goes into heat.

When to Consider Pet Surgery

Sun City Animal Hospital offers surgical procedures for your pet based on their health and situation. We may recommend the procedure to encourage proper healing after an injury or to prevent certain health concerns from developing. Generally, we suggest surgical treatments as a last solution when other treatments are not an option or when an emergency occurs. We also suggest spaying or neutering to prevent health complications if you do not intend to breed a dog or cat.

Spay and Neuter Pet Surgery

Our Sun City Animal Hospital pet services have always focused on preventing health problems. And one of the best things pet owners can do to prevent unnecessary suffering is to schedule spay and neuter surgery. Our team makes every effort to ensure your pet's safety and comfort before, during and after surgery. Our veterinary hospital has complete in-house surgery and laboratory facilities so that all tests can be quickly evaluated. Our digital radiographs monitors help us perform these surgeries with precision for quick healing.

Taking Care of Your Pet After Surgery

Pain management after surgery is very important, even when the surgery is completely routine such as in the case of spays and neuters. Just because your pet sails through his or her surgery does not mean treatment is over. There will be some home care needed, including providing pain management and looking for any unusual signs and symptoms in your pet or at the site of the surgery.

There are several pain medication options available for your pet, including anti-inflammatories, opioids, and steroids. Our veterinarians in Canton will explain all of the options to you during your visit and explain how the medications are administered.

We can successfully help you manage your pet’s pain and improve the quality of life for your pet. We also caution you against using pain medications that are designed for humans. Advil, Tylenol, and aspirin can be toxic to dogs and cats.

Other things to keep in mind include:

  • Check your pet’s incision site daily and watch for unusual redness or discharge.

  • Distract your pet from licking their incision with treats or use a medical collar.

  • Hold off from bathing your pet for at least 10 days or until sutures are removed.

  • Keep your pet from running and jumping for at least 2 weeks.

  • Give your pet a quiet, comfortable place to recover for at least 24 hours.

Spay and Neuter Pet Surgery Has Benefits

In addition to the significant health benefits, having your pet spayed or neutered is a tangible way you can help reduce the overpopulation of neglected, abandoned stray pets. Even well-intentioned pet owners find it difficult, after their pet has an unexpected litter, to effectively care for and find homes for all of the puppies or kittens. In fact, the cost of spaying and neutering in our veterinary hospital is much less than the cost of taking care of all of those baby pets for an entire year. Imagine this on a national scale: shelters take in an estimated 5-7 million animals annually, about half of which have to be euthanized because they do not have the resources to care for them, and cannot find enough loving families to adopt them. Choose to be part of the solution by having your pet spayed or neutered!

Not only does spaying or neutering your pet bring clear health benefits and make a positive influence in our community-it can actually improve your life with your pet too. Un-neutered male pets have a tendency to become aggressive and unruly when they sense a female in heat anywhere in the neighborhood. They can damage property, hurt family members and even themselves in their desperation to break out of the safety of their home or yard to find her. While on the prowl, they can be hit by cars or injured by other animals. Neutering surgery will make him much calmer, easier to train, much less likely to go around marking things with urine, and generally much easier to live with.
